I'm going to Cairns with my family and we need a place to stay (not a hostel)(give a different answer) .
A great option for you would be to rent an apartment. Shooting Star Apartments offers this, they charge around 90 A$ per apartment and I'm sure you'll like them a lot. I think they're good value: the places are clean and very stylish. Their address is 117 Grafton St, but if you want to book by phone, here's the number: 4047 7200.
