If you need to stay cheap and have pretty good accommodation, the first option in my opinion would be staying in a hostel. Prices are around A$20 (and even cheaper) up to 70/day and conditions are quite good.
Canberra City Accomodation is great, it's central, it has many facilities, but it's in the upper price rage - A$ min 55/day. Address: Akuna Street 7, or you can see it online: www.canberrabackpackers.net.au.
