Montgomery's Private Hostel & YHA Backpackers is a modern hostel, it's also central (9 Argyle St) and it has good rooms: large enough and clean. But the communal areas were a bit small, if you asked me. But at least you get to interact with the other travellers :) Besides, this might contribute to its feeling homey and comfy. And I liked the owner a lot. He can recommend nice stuff to do while you're there. Dorm beds are slightly more expensive than other places: 25 A$.
