Try the Exclusive Backpackers, on 158 Adelaide Tce, at the eastern edge of the city centre. I stayed there and I liked the clean rooms and facilities and the nice lounge area downstairs. The dorm beds are 17 A$, singles are 35 A$ and doubles 50 A$ (doubles with bathrooms are 58 A$).
